The aftermath of any surgical procedure can be a daunting process. But with a little preparation, you can be confident in your liposuction recovery routine, looking and feeling better that much faster.

Once you’ve determined whether you’re a good candidate for the procedure, there are essential tips to implement to ensure a comfortable and safe recovery. In an effort to improve medical and health conditions, shred extra weight or look and feel healthier, liposuction has become a popular method to get great results. Like with any surgical procedure however, recovery time can be challenging and time consuming. Here’s how to get through yours as smoothly as possible:

Know What to Expect

Having clear and realistic expectations post-surgery will assist with the recovering process.  Patients may experience temporary bruising, swelling and feelings of discomfort which are all normal parts of the procedure. Immediate changes to your body following liposuction can also include soreness around the area, baggy or undulated skin, irritation and mining scarring.

It’s important not to expect a dramatic change after your surgery. Your body needs time to heal, so the final results will not be visible for a couple of weeks. Under most circumstances, recovery time from liposuction is quick. Whilst you may be able to return to work after a few days, bruising, swelling and soreness can remain up to 6 weeks. Every patient recovers differently, so always check with your doctor about your progress.

Invest in Compression Wear

Post-surgery you will be sent home in a compression bandage for the area. It will be tight, but it’s essential for your recovery and to offer the best results. For optimal support, invest in a compression bodysuit. Choosing one that fits with your body will minimise post-surgery pain and aid with discomfort, as well as keeping your skin in contact with the underlying tissues as you heal.

Compression wear should be worn for at least 6 weeks following liposuction. This will help accelerate the clearance of oedema, which is fluid build-up expected from the procedure. To reduce the risk of scarring and infection, the support from compression wear will also help to break down the body’s collagen so it can be re-absorbed.

Set Up Your Recovery Zone

A little preparation goes a long way in making your recovery a more enjoyable experience. Create a comfortable space at home to relax in prior to surgery. Make sure you have all your medications and recovery items, such as reading books and extra pillows and blankets for comfort.

Your recovery zone will be your main space for the first 48 hours, which is a critical time for recouping. Drinking plenty of fluids post-surgery is vital to keep your body hydrated and healthy too, so stock up on water and pre-prepped food to encourage an easy and relaxed recovery.

Avoid Foods High in Sodium

Maintaining a healthy diet following liposuction will also help with the recovery process. Avoid anything high in sodium, such as salty potato chips, salami and canned soups. High-sodium foods can contribute to excess swelling and fluid retention. You should avoid saturated fats and food high in sugar and salt too.

Instead, incorporate more fruit, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein into your diet. Eating several smaller meals throughout the day is best for the first few weeks to help maintain your energy levels. Berries, salmon and green tea are fantastic for increasing vitamin and antioxidant intake, boosting the body’s recovery. It goes without saying too, that alcohol and smoking must be avoided whilst your body is still healing.

Tip: Increasing your water intake in the first few hours and weeks after surgery will reduce edema and assist in flushing out excess fluid and toxins in your body too. Frequent hydration is key to maintaining a healthy metabolism and aids in digestion.

Encourage Circulation through Massage

Massages are great for promoting a healthy blood flow to the healing parts of your body. Whilst it will depend on the extent of work you’ve had done and how far along in the recovery process you are, gentle massages are proven to speed up the healing.

Make sure they’re only gentle massages though! Massages stimulate better blood flow and circulation. But too much blood flow can also increase bruising. Ice should be used to avoid bruising. Always check with your doctor about your massage plan to prevent anything too aggressive.

Balance Rest and Movement

Rest is crucial to assist your body in the healing process. Balance rest with small amounts of movement, like gentle stretching and walking around the house, to promote a better recovery. The balance can be tough. Especially when there’ll be days you don’t want to move at all, but knowing when to give and take plays an important role in the process.
